Kinja'd!!!

So I’m getting married next month. We got some paperwork today that needs to be signed, scanned, and returned by Monday. Of course the printer decides to stop printing black ink, right after replacing the cartridges.

From what I’ve read this seems to be a common issue with many HP printers. Support says to clean the printheads, only use their insanely overpriced genuine cartridges, and not much else. My inner conspiracy theorist feels like it’s a planned obsolescence scam to force people to buy new printers they shouldn’t need. Yet here I am, with a dead printer and a complete set of new cartridges.

At least if I can get the stuff printed elsewhere I can still scan it. Worst case we cheap out and buy a just a printer, not a 3-in-1 deal, and keep the one we already have for scanning.

Obligatory car content: Can you imagine the uproar if you had no option but to replace your car after your third oil change? That’s essentially what this is.

Back up in yo ass with the resurrection, it’s a group harder than an erection that shows no affection.

Poety, my friends.

Not oil change, third tank of gas. And the whole tank has to be replaced, and you can only use a certain brand of fuel, and if you don’t drive often the gas will dry out and your car will die sooner.

“Can you imagine the uproar if you had no option but to replace your car after your third oil change?”

I can’t imagine many people objecting, given that in that scenario the cars would cost less than two or three tanks of fuel.

Home printers are a total crap shoot. I know my parents went through 3 mid-high priced ones before they found one that was reliable, and yet my 6 year old $100 one that Apple gave me for free when I bought my Macbook Pro still works great.

Get a Brother laser printer. Its like the Toyota Hilux of printers.

Say it with me now. BUY A LASER! I have a compact Brother laser (HL-2340DW). It does duplex, airprint, wifi, 27ppm, etc. A high end toner cart costs $50 from Brother and does 2600 prints. I have a bigger one too whose high end cart is rated for 9000. I think I’ve replaced it once?

It was also super easy to set up (minus typing in the wifi password on a 16 letter display) with my computers.

Stay away from inkjet printers in the future. Laser printers have come down substantially in price, and even the toner is cheap if you buy it from a 3rd party. Printers are still printers, but laser dealys are much more efficient.

I’ve said for well over a decade now that Printers are the WORST peripheral devices on the planet. My Epson I bought refuses to be controlled. If I reinstall the printer about 3 times, I can get an hour or so of scans. Then it says fuck you and disconnects and nothing can control the scanner.

The button on the front of it to scan has NEVER worked. Epson’s contact center is full of idiots.

We deal with the printer hell as well, usually it’s like your case when you are trying to get scans or photocopies.. We had an HP and I thought it was smart to buy an extra cartridge just incase- then the printer died.

They are basically disposable- $80 for a new one every 5 years or so..

Printers suck, from consumer to enterprise. They are little more advanced than 3d printers. That said a Brother Laser is the most solid I’ve ever used besides an industrial dot matrix.

I hate printers. To the point I don’t own one. I just print stuff at work if I need to.

If you are returning digital versions of the signed documents, I have a solution. Scan your signature, and edit the image to a transparent background. Save a copy, and paste onto any documents you need.

Lots of silly places want you to download a form, print it, fill it out by hand, then fax it back to them. I have bad handwritting and a hatred of crappy printers. Instead, upload to a PDF editing website, type in the necessary information, paste on your digital signature, and use a free web-based faxing site to send the completed file. No paper, no ink, no waste, and no clutter.

For something that requires only a signature, that’s a great idea.

In the end I bought an HP DeskJet 2547 for less than replacement ink cartridges, which is a whole other rant. Paperwork signed, scanned, and delivered.

Companies like HP are never in the business of selling printers. The printers make no profit— some probably lose money. They are in the buisness of selling catridges, which are almost all profit. This is why they fight tooth and nail to prevent third party competition on replacements. Some of the cartridges are setup to “expire” whether you use all the ink or not— just so you will go buy replacements.

I have been using computers for over 25 years now, since my first exposure to a shiny new Apple II in elementary school. In all the years since, using all platforms, OSes, and printer technology (dot matrix, inkjet, laser, etc.), I have had one constant. Printing is always a big PITA and the biggest frustrating in computing. Always has been, and always will be I believe.

Any time I can avoid unecessary paper, the better. That being said, there are times in life having information or documentation in hard form in hand is invaluable. So we are slaves to the printing demon forever.

The old school HP laser printers universities and businesses had in the late 90s were pretty solid. They could churn out hundreds of pages all day, every day, with little upkeep. As much as I hate printers, I would classify these in the Least Worst category.

yep it’s insane. The person who creates a reliable go-to printer will be not only a wealthy person but provide a gift to humanity.

A gift for sure, but I personally am not so sure on the wealthy part. A reliable printer would have some cost (hopefully moderate), and that will be a tough sell to the average consumer compared to the cheap disposable models on the market. Look how commonly the typical buyer would rather save a small amount up front to buy crappy Chinese junk from Walmart that breaks in a year than an actual quality product that can last.

Oh I think if someone would legit stand behind a printer and it was really that could, they’d sell a ton of them. Even non-tech people get pissed at printers. A Simple “THIS SHIT IS GOING TO WORK” policy would sell a lot of printers.

Good point— you’d need the right advertising to educate the buying public that this is something different from the cheap disposable junk they are accustomed to getting.
